I really am another damned medievalist, of the historian-type. I teach at a Small Liberal Arts College, and feel most comfortable dealing with pre-modern stuff. My own niche is Very Late Antiquity/Pretty Early Medieval, but like most people in my field who aren't superstars, I teach the World History survey and pretty much anything that isn't US. Expect to read stuff about my life (this is a more private blog than my Blogspot one), my daily adventures as an employed academic), and my thoughts on all kinds of stuff. There will be history and pedagogy, and occasionally sf/fantasy. Also, political and religion rants behind filters.
My friends policy is that you should feel free to friend me, and I'll be flattered. But if we haven't yet met via someone else on my flist or in RL, please don't be offended if I don't immediately friend you back. I may well lurk for a while to see what you have to say -- mostly because I find it far too easy to get addicted to my friends list! If you're another medievalist, historian, or interested in sf/fantasy, or if you just seem really cool, there's a probability that I'll friend you. If I've found you via someone else's LJ, I'll ask before friending you. I've been burned by friends before, so please don't think if I don't friend you, it's personal.
Regarding filters: most of the people on my flist are on more than one filter. If you don't want to be on a particular filter (like the 'rants about my private life' one), just let me know. My filters are pretty much according to levels of trust and interest. What I reveal to you depends on how well I feel I know you and whether I feel comfortable discussing certain things with you. A very few people are on almost every filter, and I move people around as I get to know them better.
